CANCER STATISTICS

Various facts for information only

  1. The 4 main cancers are :- Breast, Lung, Prostate & Colorectal.
  2. There are over 200 types of cancer .
  3. 1 in 3 people will be diagnosed with some form of cancer related disease during their lifetime.
  4. 1 in 4 people will die of a cancer related disease.
  5. 1 in 3 people suffer from a cancer related disease due to smoking and statistics still show 1/4 of all adults smoke.
  6. Life expectancy in the UK has doubled since the mid 19th century, yet the population at risk from cancer has also increased.
  7. 1/4 of all deaths in the UK are cancer related.
  8. In the millennium year (2000) 151,200 people died of cancer.
  9. Breast Cancer :- 30% of all females diagnosed, most common in women.
  10. Lung Cancer :- 94 people die every day, most common in men.
  11. Prostate :- second most common in men and on the increase.
  12. Colorectal :- bowel cancer mostly effects the elderly.


Cancer Research UK

Cancer Research UK is a charity dedicated to discovering new cancer treatments and cures through pioneering research which is recognised worldwide.

Every week 5,000 people are diagnosed with cancer in this country which has led to the NHS considering cancer as its highest priority with the assistance of community work and the voluntary sector including charities.

  • Bring better treatments to cancer patients.
  • Train more cancer doctors, nurses and scientists for research-

  • Cancer Research UK uses donations to purchase high tech equipment and recruit highly trained staff; in addition to this they support 500 research group leaders. Their mission is to protect and promote the health of the public by research into the nature, causes, prevention, treatment and cure of all forms of cancer.

    Sue Ryder Care is a cancer care charity, with care centres providing services in many parts of the UK all dependent on voluntary donations.

  • Psychological and emotional support for patients, families and friends.
  • Respect for the patients religious and cultural beliefs.

  • Sue Ryder Care provides home care teams consisting of consultants, clinical nurses, social workers and trained volunteers whose aim it is to offer the expertise provided in the hospices. They also provide a bereavement service, available to anyone who feels the need to talk about problems with either the illness or bereavement.

    With the support of fund raising teams, Sue Ryder Care will continue to improve the quality of life of cancer patients and provide support for their families and friends.
